How do I use common software packages?
The following packages are very widely used. Training courses are often available at reasonable prices (sometimes free). Check the following organizations for training information.
Begin with word processing
Microsoft products such as Microsoft office are the most commonly used software packages in rural health. It is important to acquaint yourself with a range of tools available to assist you in your community leadership role. Sometimes we only make use of a small part of the overall capacity of our computer but by learning how to use the software available, you will be able to make better use of time as the software is designed to help you. Packages that are available to assist with word processing include:
Spreadsheets
These packages perform calculations and projections and produce graphs and charts. They are invaluable for managing budgets and finances. The most common packages include:
Databases
Database software allows you to create records that can be used to help manage your community organisation. Mailing lists and automated searches can save time on administrative tasks. These packages range from the simple to the highly complex. The following packages are suitable for community groups.
