Theme 1 - Leadership
1.3. Developing Skills for Effective Leadership
As an effective community leader there are a range of personal skills that will help you feel more confident and "in control", and will let you make better use of the resources at your disposal. Life-long learning benefits everyone as we gain confidence to enjoy new experiences. In particular, gaining skills as a leader can increase the satisfaction gained from your leadership role as you increase in effectiveness with each new skill.
Understanding your personality a little better may have helped you discover areas where developing skills might be helpful. If not you could audit your skills by:
- Listing all your skill strengths and weaknesses
- Prioritising the area you feel you could most benefit from developing
Skills that are known to be helpful to leaders are:
- Self Assessment
- Identifying my needs and getting them met (sometimes)
- Managing your time
- Dealing with conflict
- Negotiating
- Managing stress
