Theme 2 - Planning
Where do we apply for funding?
There is a wide range of funding sources and organisations that could help you with your project. Their requirements vary from straightforward to complex . It is important to match your objectives with their priority areas.
Different types of funding bodies include:
- Commonwealth, state and local government
- Philanthropic organisations such as the Myer Foundation, and the Smith Family
- Academic institutions
- The private sector
- Service clubs, and
- Other non-government organisations.
Larger organisations generally have stricter requirements for all criteria such as planning, project justification, and accountability, unless they are specifically targeting small community groups. An example of the requirements for larger grants is available at the Tasmanian Community Fund site.
Unless you are partnering with an organisation that is experienced in applying for funding we recommend you start with a smaller grant that is manageable.
Grants may be advertised through
- Newspapers (local and national)
- Radio and television
- Professional Journals
- Newsletters
- Websites
There are a number of websites that keep an up-to-date record of grants currently available. Some useful sites for information about grants include:
- The Grantslink site is an Commonwealth government site. It is a database of many funding programs available for a range of projects.
- Women Tasmania offer an annual small grants program, with information available at this site
- Community Builders NSW has a comprehensive range of materials on searching and applying for funding
