Theme 3 - Teams

What sort of group structure will suit us?

When interested individuals come together to work on a community problem or project, they need to consider how formal or informal their group needs to be.

Informal groups are appropriate when:

  • A casual group of friends or communities of interest gets together
  • Fewer than five people make up the group
  • Activities are small, occasional or very short-term
  • Activities are unlikely to involve the public

Formal groups are appropriate when:

  • The group has five or more members who are not that well known to each other
  • Activities are long-term or are for large events
  • Activities are likely to involve the public
  • The group will need to raise funds to undertake activities
