Career Summary
Deb is a Registered Nurse who has worked in a variety of clinical settings in both the public and private sector, including emergency, rural hospital, aged care and telephone triage. She has also worked as a Union Organiser for the Health and Community Services Union (HACSU) and as an Electorate Officer for a Federal MP.
Having grown up in the Southern Midlands of Tasmania she has a keen interest in rural health and rural nursing. She has also had involvement in various community groups including the Rural Youth Organisation of Tasmania and Agfest Organising Committee. In 1996 she was fortunate enough to be selected for a three month exchange programme to Sweden. She has also previously held the role of Safety Co-ordinator for the Agfest Organising Committee.
Current Study
PhD Candidate
Title of research: How is quality and safety dealt with in relation to the clinical nursing practice of nurses working in remote health settings?
The PhD study is in relation to patient safety and error. The study aims to investigate the relationship between the severity of outcome of medication error, safety climate and error reporting by nurses working in rural hospital, aged care and community nursing settings. The methodology being utilised is Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as described by Charles Ragin (and others) and is particularly relevant to small N studies.
