Introduction

What’s so good about a career in health?

  • There are lots of jobs – both in Australia and all around the world – think TRAVEL!
  • Making a difference in people’s lives can be very rewarding.
  • New developments make health an exciting and ever-changing area to work in.
  • The work is interesting and challenging.
  • Health care involves working as part of a team.

Why Rural Health?

There is a shortage of health professionals in rural and regional areas. This means they are very much in demand and are respected and valued members of their communities.

The skills and experience gained in a rural location can be broader and offer more challenges and rewards than in the city.

There are opportunites to be self-employed or to work as a member of a health-care team. Many health workers visit rural areas on a regular basis or work as temporaries or 'locums' when resident health workers want a break.

What sort of person makes a good health worker?

If you are the type of person who has a genuine interest in people, good communication and problem-solving skills and is highly motivated and enjoys a challenge, then the chances are that a career in health could be for you.

What will university be like?

University can open the doors to many wonderful opportunities, both of the intellectual and recreational kind. Although going to University may seem to be a long way in the future, knowing a little about what to expect of University can help you achieve your aim to get there.

For more information go to Attending University.

What will it cost?

Money is a major consideration when thinking about going to university.

Accommodation, textbooks and stationery and the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) all need to be taken into account.

While money might seem to be a major barrier, there are opportunities for rural students who achieve good school results and for those who are financially disadvantaged to gain Tasmania University scholarships and other financial assistance to help support them through their years at university.
