Kentish Statistical Local Area 2004, Line Graph

Sheffield Farmland
Sheffield Farmland

The area surrounding Sheffield was explored by the surveyor Nathaniel Kentish in 1842 as he was searching for a route from Deloraine to the north west. It was opened up for settlement, but was neither surveyed nor settled until 1859, probably due to the thick forests which covered the surrounding areas. It has been suggested that the name ‘Sheffield’ was chosen by Edward Curr, the then manager of the Van Diemen’s Land Company, who was a native of Sheffield, England.

Sheffield experienced a period of rapid growth in 1963 with the commencement of the Mersey-Forth Power Development Scheme in 1963. The power scheme was completed in 1963 and the town’s population declined. Today Sheffield is the centre of the Kentish local government area and is well-known for its murals, most of which depict the early history of the area.
