Rural and Remote Funding
The University Department of Rural Health provides Tasmanian undergraduate nursing students with funds to assist with the cost of travel and accommodation while they undertake Introduction to Nursing Practice; Foundations of Nursing Practice; Contemporary Nursing Practice; and Community Nursing Practice placements in rural communities. Mental health placements are not covered.
In order to qualify for an allowance:
- The length of placement must be a minimum of one week, and
- The rural site must be located a minimum of 40km from the student’s home, and
- The rural site must be located a minimum of 40km from the student’s study centre (Launceston or Hobart).
To receive a payment, students are requested to complete an online evaluation form at the end of the placement for quality assurance purposes. This will assist with processing payments.

101 km + $45 per week
Bass Strait Islands
Airfares to the Bass Strait Islands are fully funded. Flights are organised through the relevant SNM staff member.
Accommodation
Students undertaking placements at Campbell Town, Dover, Flinders Island, George Town, King Island, Nubeena, Oatlands, Queenstown, Scottsdale, Smithton, St Helens, St Marys and Swansea are provided with free accommodation at a Rural Health Teaching Site.
Students undertaking placements at Ouse, Ainslie House and Bruny Island are provided with free accommodation at the health facility.
Students undertaking placements at other rural sites may claim up to $50 per week for accommodation subject to the eligibility requirements above.
